Memoir v. Massachusetts decision establishes when a work of art can be considered obscene.

Supreme Court, hearing a complaint against the novel Fanny Hill and in a ruling written by Justice William Brennan, declares that a work can be declared obscene it if it is “utterly without redeeming social value.”
